The Plan

Below is the list of sessions and keynotes I will be attending today 11.20.2008.  I will do my best to post live.  At conferences end, my notes will be posted on any missed section.

8:30-9:20 am

K1-1 Using Digital Notebooks for Research, Clarity and Organization Capital II

Scott Weidig, District 211, Schaumburg High School

We all face a personal challenge any time that we interact with large amounts of information... How do

we gather the information, catalog it, organize it, and store it for fast access, recall, and manipulation?

Digital Notebooks can provide students, teachers, and administrators the way to overcome this challenge

successfully. (Appropriate for middle school and higher grade levels.)

You can find the actual presentation on Ustream @ VanishingPoint

Twitter: Vanishing Point

PowerPoint Plex-Can see entire presentation on one page

Digital Notebooks

Provides organization and clarity that you don't get with paper and pen or word.

Collaboration tool: 3 ring binder meets the web (upload resources & drag and drop as you go)

Why digital notebook?

Convenient way to gather and save info

near instant recall of info - no need to recreate the search

--bridge attribution of sources

anywhere/anytime access

share and collaborate

Pull together content in one place

Evernote

OneNote 2007

Google Notebook

ZOHO

Research the ability to cut and paste to gather info quick and accurately (source detail)

ability to add a variety of media types

Rich dynamic content (spreadsheets, documents, youtube)

Collaborative by design

Organiztaion and Clarity

organization

structure - sections/pages/tags

Dynamically rearrange content

Source location easily accessible

Multiple levels and layering of content

Clarity

Emphasize important points / topics /ideas (mashing info)

Add rich content

Hyperlinking

Multiple viewpoints

GOOGLE NOTEBOOK

Browser extensions for google notebok

EVERNOTE

more invasive - quick link button in task tray, browser and outlook

export to google docs

links back to original source

Collaborate on Research

Publish Notebook information

EVERNOTE

all content becomes fully searchable

you can "ink" directly into evernote

Publish from various sources

Wes Fryar? - pictures of business cards uploaded (text within an image is fully searchable)

ZOHO

Fully Editable content

RSS feeds

Fully navigable websites

Share and or publish content at book, page or level

Built around Collaboration (integrated Skype)

Google news searches automatically create RSS feeds for that search!!

Publish at book, page and object (creating links to specific areas)

OneNote

Publish at book, page and object (creating links to specific areas)

Ink text and audio video on the fly

content fully searchable including audio and video

Advanced Editing and formatting

Embed full documents

Looking at Google docs

print, share and export

wikipedia is a good source but not a primary or secondary source (Immediate possibly relevant information)

use wikipedia to prove it!  I love it!

Microsoft Onenote already on tablets (visioning, RTI)

Run problem solving teams (dump info from all types of folks)

Right clicking a page can add to 3 online sources

Publishing to the cloud = less loss of information

Google notebook culls info but does not do searching (Evernote does)

Can upload to Evernote from phone - don't even need the app!!

teachertube.com is a safe alternative to youtube (although there is not enough content)

Only Zoho allows embedding video on the fly.

Kids can create collaborative information without any assistance (and can be locked down)

Suite players = ZOHO (Microsoft Office but on the Web) and OneNote

Information in digital form can be printed into OneNote and then can be "inked" on

Can be exported as pdf and dropped to website

F1-2 ClickSmart: The Holistic Approach Plaza F

Vicki Davis, Westwood Schools

Students have to become intuitive learners and able to adapt and learn new software. Tired of seeing her

students outdated each time software was upgraded, this method was developed to teach students HOW

to learn new software and is the subject of the book, “ClickSmart: the Smart Way to Help Software Click.”

(Appropriate for all grade levels.)

Dependancy model

Software education today

Platform department

Not problem solving

Teacher dependent – point and click teaching

Empower each other – get the students off of the teacher

Current model is script dependent

Does not require problem solving (new software = out of date students)

What do students get out of course?

Teach students how to learn new software

Self-dependent learners

Intentionally let folks fail (wikiwars)

Categories of instruction

Word processing, online publishing (hyperlinking and contextual writing –embed & publish widgets)

RSS reading

Interactive/3d environment

DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP

Types of software (computer apps and web apps) – platform independent

Core is the typical scenario

Now we have to teach web apps

Primary app:

Feature-rich

Good help files

De facto standard (common characteristics with de facto standard)

Textbook using primary app

Some “bloatware”

Step 1.

Select category of instruction and app then click smart

Menus (the words at the top of the page – talkthrough them), toolbar (mouse highlighting for info), dropdown, help, panes, dialog boxes

Word as model

Sandboxing – allow play in new software.

Play before you produce

Teams assign toolbars to teams who then share what they learn

Best students hate projects because of “bottomfeeders” Other intellenges than A students

Teacher as coach and facilitator “filling in the gaps”

Production Back to basics textbook

STILL have the students do exercises…

Still need to know process

Assessment

Creation of artifact using skills via an application test

Some skills that WERE NOT taught (make sure you can look it up easily in help the way you write the terms)

--Helpless handraisers is a form of procrastination

Visual Workshops in Secondary Apps & comparisions

5a. Visual Artifact creation

Finsihed product select secondary app

Ask student to use app and create a product “like” the example

5b Comaprison

Reflective blog post comparing the two applications. (google docs vs Microsoft Word)

Still seems a little stunting if you limit the guidance

Sometimes there isn’t an answer

Documentation Creation

Screen Shots

ScreenCasting

Using wikis

“Teach” an assigned topic using a variety of media

-How to help themselves

-Teaching to fish for life rather than feed for the day!

11:00-11:50F1-3 Wiki World: Collaborative Learning Through Technology Plaza F

Annette Lamb, Indiana University at Indianapolis

Use open editing software to engage students in exciting collaborative learning experiences. Promote

reading, writing, and high level thinking across content areas and grade levels. Wikis are a quick

and easy way to energize reluctant learners, promote classroom synergy, and encourage authentic

learning. (Appropriate for all grade levels.)

A1-4 iTalk: Exploring Career Pathways Through Digital Storytelling Plaza A

Roger Sanders, Valley Education for Employment Systems and Lisa Woods, Newark Community High School District 18

Students discover who they are, their career interests, and personal pathways through compelling and

emotionally engaging digital stories. Go beyond the paper ICP to students creating their story via a high tech/

high touch process. The product is a personal reflection shown through digital media. (Appropriate for middle

school and higher grade levels.)

Teaching and learning tool you can use for collaboration and assessment

eduscapes.com - activate button

Why wikis - idea that internet is no longer something you consume

Internet is a tool for creation

Kids need to know how to become a consumer and a creator

Understanding of the creation process and the value of collaboration

Old way vs. new way

Books and tests and surveys (too easy to not create the work)

Wikis allow the shy or folks who don't handle discussions well

Virtual discussions are more comfortable

Turning away from kids writing a summary to taking ownership

Wikispaces.com (free and unlimited space without advertising in the teaching section)

World can see it but only those with passwords can edit or private

WIKI is quick quick in Hawain

Are we already behind the curve with Wiki's?  Aren't Nings more powerful wikis?

Group of children each in charge of their own book to hold discusiions - Giving ownership

Using history for assessment

Not loosing work to the virtual dog/virtual homework

Can be notified of updates.

Important to realize there are different types of learners.  Use timelines.

Thinking visually do not need to be technology based can be scaned drawings

Once original item done, peer editing takes place (remember you can track changes)

Comments can be used for assessment (look under the history link)

Rather than everybody doing everything you can segment things out to meet strengths

Getting to the standard is the key

Commoncraft Wikis in plain english

Start by joining a project that already exists or use one as a model or start with something that is already a team building activity or replace a stagnant one.

Independent vs collaboration (find a mix)

Internal Links and Peer Editing

Build the scaffolding for them

I love this term scaffolding it's the teacher allowing the new Michalangelos to paint the digital Cistine Chapel!

Build the wiki in Educational  mode

Project based wikis as new webquests (Oh, how I loathe webquests)

Collaboration

history

discussion

process writing

ongoing

unique content

authentic audience

multi-media

need to blog about what all that means.

Kick off wikis

Catatrophe! Are you Prepared? wiki

Travel the USA wiki (it's a mess - because its been used so much) wiki

Categories of projects

Wikipedia - use it to find little known facts - core group of people more dedicated

Current Events

As it hapens

Look for local wonders

Look up your hometown What's fact fiction and perspective

Wikipedia locks out IP addresses of obnoxious changes

Use wikipedia comments (wikimedia commons)

G2-2 Integrating Technology in the Elementary Classroom:

Moving Across the Implementation Bridge Sangamon

Tom Jackson, Aurora University/College of Education

Thirty-three percent of teachers use computer technology to teach or engage students. Just lukewarm reaction?

Clear reasons for embracing new methods are needed when moving from the status quo. The unknown is

uncertain, but evidence shows technology is the tip of enriched student engagement, and that educators need

to embrace learning. (Appropriate for elementary and middle school grade levels.)

Why are we not embracing technology?

Technology is still in the lab.

Difficulty with change

top 5 reasons for non-integration

If I can do it

Someone else will do it

I'm too old

Tech training is great

context support

biggest obstacles is lack of training. No one comes to my classroom to help me. Technology coach

Reasons to integrate and 7 steps to integration

1. Agreeing -Understand the vision/mission/purpose

How will things be done differently and how will things improve? (Assessment)

not only hear but reflect

2. How will using tech foster the achievement of standards

Development Learning and Motivation

know understand and use major concepts

students prefered methods of learning are not books but technology

The standards can be pulled from projects naturally

Does technology really need integration.  yes, large difference having it be more real

2. Recognize Culture - beyond the statous quo

First order change - have capacity and resouces

see benefits

Assess current level of use

How will my needs be met

Teacher proficiency & self-efficacy

"Gotta be too stupid to quit"

3. Collaborating - acknowledging the need for time and Differentiation of learning styles

Recognize and reflect on previous experience

What is the vision and what is reality

What are the planned (hoped for) outcomes

Placing truct in leadership

Placing trust by gathering, listening to, and using input

different levels of expertise

place trust in each other and leaders

4. Beginnings actions speak loudly

Engage and collaboratively support

-But I don't know how to

Give it the college try - 3x before your out

Share experiences

Flow occurs in areas where students are challenged and percieve themselves as highing a high degree of skill

5. Supporting the middle
Ensure every first try is supported in the classroom context

Discuss the plan and look for weaknesses

-Help must be available

Teachers can't afford to loose time

Reflect and Revise

Need to see it being used>

1 or 2 bad experiences color future attempts

Aligning Current proficiencies with the environmental capacities

Tech entry points vary

Observe the learning

Planning and looking for needed interventions

6. Reflecting - Focus on the Vision

where do we go from here

Using technology in new and better ways

Moving from using planned purposes to modification of tech to achieve innovations in learning.

technology is engaging once involved understand content at a deeper level and they become the teachers

All the videos I've seen of students look so reheresed?! not just this session.

It's a process with benefits to learning

Can no longer step back and not embrace it

N2-3 Closing the Digital Divide Capital V

Robert Small, Township High School District 211
The more technology is used to improve learning, the more important it is to make sure everyone has fair

access. A suburban school district has worked to close the digital divide by partnering with community

centers, libraries and parents. Come find out what has worked and what has not. (Appropriate for high school

grade levels.)

More we use technology the more we create a digital divide

What can we as educators do to close the divide

Created a multi-tiered attack to connect families that didn't have tech to tech

web 2.0 bridge as well

Parents more involved across the board

Have not section can be very mobile

The plan

Checkout surplus laptops (remove networking)

Open Labs to the community

Educate parents on technology service provided

Place surplus computers in community centers (support but not staff)

Checkout Surplus Laptops

Gateway 450s, No Network, Re-Image on return, Provided laptop bags and licensing

Checkout form and statistics

Extended Laptop Computer Loan Agreeement

Have to have a need.

Parent and teacher sign the form

Check out a week at a time

3rd year of program - lost one laptop

6 year old laptops don't have much value

it's a hastle to check out which can be a problem (but never let the form get in the way of getting one)

Open Computer Labs

Continuing Education Program Advertises Program

Open Twice a week

6:30 PM to 9:30 PM

hire a lab supervisor

Statistics - no one ever came

Most people who don't have resources need to work two jobs

Educate Parents

Two Goals

What we provide students

What we provide parents

Designed Lesson Plan

Created Materials

Find Instructors

2005 once a week - 2 or 3 parents in a semester

2006, 2007 4 times a year (still not a lot)

Hall Davidson, Discovery Education, Inc.

“The Revenge of the Digital Immigrants: Teaching with Media Technology”

What veteran teachers suspected the research has proved: 21st Century students are different. With different

attention spans, higher IQ test scores, and social networks, their sophistication comes earlier with a different

skill set. There is a silver lining: We can teach this “New Brain” more effectively, more efficiently, more

engagingly. We have the technology! Media has evolved and education must evolve to match.

O2-4 Technology for Independence Capital VI

Tim Kennedy, Lindbergh Middle School

Assistive technology allows all students to participate in educational activities to the best of their ability. This

session will demonstrate many examples of assistive technology and review the SETT program to help match

the student with the technology. (Appropriate for all grade levels.)

B2-5 Resources to Know and Love Plaza B

Scott Weidig, District 211 – Schaumburg High School

The goal of education is to develop and foster the love of life-long learning. Educators strive to achieve this

goal by developing authentic learning assignments for their students... This session will assist teachers in

providing resources to their classes that will enable students to develop their own life-long learning network.
